Biblical Reasons To Homeschool

There are many well-meaning Christian parents who will tip toe around the issue of homeschooling.  They will say that there are many options to choose from and what is right for one family may not be right for another. Public school might be right for some. They don't want to judge.

But to that I simply say, that is not a faithful answer.

Public schools are no longer what they were when our grandparents were kids. Nor even when we were kids. They are Satan's cathedral.

I know what I say is bold. I know it is unpopular. But it is the truth. I am thankful that I can still speak the truth in this free nation of ours.

There is no good thing in public schools.

"There was a time when we could count on the church and the school and the community helping us train up our children in the way they should go.

But the reigning philosophy today is anti-God, anti-moral, anti-common sense, anti-American, anti-family, anti-life, and the world is now militant. It's out to get our children.  It's out to subvert our activities.  And they're passing laws.

I'm afraid we stand on the precipice of a situation where we might face some very dire consequences politically.

The public school system is a drug stupid, s*x-oriented, illiterate mass of misfit, Marxist clones.
Anyone who puts their child in public school is either really ignorant or child abusers."

-Michael Pearl (Jumping Ship)

Children are born needing parents, not classroom teachers.

Ephesians 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Notice that the Scripture says to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.  Does this describe how children are being brought up in public school? Because they are being brought up there. How can they be brought up in the Lord in a place that has outlawed the name of Jesus Christ the Son of God and public prayer?

Don't expect a child who spends MOST of their day in the company of others (i.e. not you) to be loyal to you at the end of the day. Research reveals that whomever a child spends most of their time with has the biggest influence in the life of that child.

Another important bit of information is that government schools know something many parents don't.  Which is, once a child (who's enrolled in public school) is on school property, parents legally give up their authority over that child.  Sound crazy? It's true. It may be that some schools haven't yet been bold enough to exercise that "authority", but many schools today actually prohibit parents from sitting in on the classes their children are in.

Biblical Reasons

God’s word contains clear instructions for raising, training, and educating our children. There are so many reasons parents need to reject government indoctrination centers (i.e., public schools).  But the most important reasons include moral, ethical, biblical and social.

Ironically, a big reason parents feel compelled to enroll their children into public schools is for the socialization and academics. But research shows that children learn better at home and that homeschooled children are actually better socialized than the kids holed up in a classroom with only their peers to socialize with.

Kids come away from public schools not scholarly, but scarred.  And why not? They have spent 12 years sitting at a desk learning to pass tests. By the time they've graduated they know more about vulgarity, violence and immorality than they do about God, his word or his commands.  One hour a week in God's church is no match against 50 hours a week in Satan's.

Parents will be held accountable for the environment they choose for the precious children God, not the government, has given them.

Matthew 18:6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Family Loyalty

Why do you think public schools have anthems, colors, pennants, clubs, outings, contests, athletic competitions, cheerleading, art guilds, etc?  These activities are all designed to make the child feel a sense of loyalty and kinship with the school and the people in it. The "normal school kid" is loyal to his school, school friends, and more and more commonly now, school officials who promote that they will keep controversial secrets from parents.

Please take a moment and read the following passages of scripture and notice how they describe the product of America's public schools with alarmingly accurate detail.

Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. Romans 1:29-32

Why, in this long list of despicable traits, is "disobedient to parents" included? This describes minor children because adults are not required to obey their parents, only to honor.

On the issue of educating children, the Bible settles the matter.

Parents are the irrefutable stewards of the children given to them by God. And parents have the ultimate responsibility and authority over their children. If we fail at this responsibility, we fail at life.
Psalms 127:3-5 Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.
Genesis 33:5 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with thee? And he said, The children which God hath graciously given thy servant.
Genesis 48:8-9 And Israel beheld Joseph’s sons, and said, Who are these? And Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, whom God hath given me in this place. And he said, Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will bless them.
Isaiah 8:18 Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.
Hebrews 2:13 And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.
Our Children are God's and not Caesar's:
Matthew 22:21 They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.
Ezekiel 16:20-21 Moreover thou hast taken thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne unto me, and these hast thou sacrificed unto them to be devoured. Is this of thy whoredoms a small matter, That thou hast slain my children, and delivered them to cause them to pass through the fire for them?
The stewardship of our children is clearly understood:
Ephesians 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Deuteronomy 6:6-9 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Proverbs 23:7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
2 Corinthians 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
Government (public) schools have taken God, his son Jesus Christ, prayer and creation out of schools which leaves them without wisdom or understanding.
1Co 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
Job 28:28 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
Isaiah 54:13 And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.

Jeremiah 10:2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
Matthew 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Humanists in Training
Government (public) schools work hard to train their students to become little humanists rather than God fearing servants of the Lord.  Don't believe me?  Ask a public schooled student a few questions and see if I'm right.
  • Do you believe God created you? What does your school teach?
  • Do you believe in abstinence? What does your school teach?
  • Do you believe that homose*uality is normal? What does your school teach?
  • Do you believe all families are equal? What does you school teach?
  • Do you believe in absolute Truth? What does your school teach?
  • Do you believe our rights come from government? What does your school teach?
  • Do you believe the environment is more important than an unborn child? What does your school teach?
  • Do you believe that God is the ultimate authority? What does your school teach?

Why do parents allow their “good school” to teach their children things they don’t believe? Or more accurately, why do they PAY them to?

Does a child “walk with wise men” in government schools?

Proverbs 13:20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

1 Corinthians 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.

Psalms 119:97-104 O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.

I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts. I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word. I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me. How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

James 3:13-18 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

James 3:14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

The verses and reasons I've talked about in this article are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to biblical reasons to homeschool.

I realize many parents think these things don't apply to the "good school" they have their children in.  But they cannot side step this truth: parents who send their children away for the majority of the day - anywhere - hand them over to another authority.  And that other authority is not God ordained.  Mothers and Fathers are the God ordained authority in the life of their children.

Luke 9:25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

We need only look at the end result of what the public schools turn out in high school to see the sad reality of that.

The word of God tells us how often we're to teach our children:

Deut 6:7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them
1) when thou sittest in thine house,
2) and when thou walkest by the way,
3) and when thou liest down
4) and when thou risest up.

This verse indicates that teaching our children occurs all day long.  That doesn't necessarily mean sitting at the dining room table with textbooks although textbooks are great and useful. But this scripture refers to "here a little, there a little". So let us fear and obey God's commands and not man's.

Training up children and teaching them the wonderful records God gave us in the Bible and living out his commandments is truly a joy.

If your children are in public school, I encourage you to join the mass exodus of over one and a half million and bring your children home...where they belong.

The good news is that homeschooling has become widely known and accepted all over the United States.  It is legal in every single state of America as well as many parts of the world.  With the advent of Internet technology, homeschool groups are easily located giving families a chance to meet together for encouragement and support on their journey.

A few of the ministries and organizations that we have found useful on our homeschooling journey are: HSLDA, Vision Forum, No Greater Joy Ministries, Love to Learn, Homeschool Oasis, Christian Book, Doorposts, Exodus Mandate.

May God bless and guide you into this all important decision!

Thank you so much for this post! Our family has decided to homeschool and we are so excited about this adventure! My sister who lives several states away has been homeschooling for years and inspires me so much. But I know my friends here really don't understand our decision to teach our children from home. This is so well written and I have pinned it!

I hope you'll join my weekly linky party at Teagan's Travels if you have time.
