Favorite Old Fashioned Gingerbread

This is a delicious recipe that makes me feel like I'm in my grandma's kitchen. It smells so good and fills the house with a nostalgic aroma.  This recipe is also handy as it uses simple pantry ingredients. I love to make this for my family often and it makes a great wholesome snack or weeknight dessert.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 2 1/2 cups flour (I use 1/2 all purpose and 1/2 whole wheat)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon real sea salt
  • 1 cup hot water
Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 deg. celsius). Grease & flour a 9 in. square pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and butter.  Beat in the egg, and mix in the molasses.
  3. In a bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger and cloves  Blend into the creamed mixture.
  4. Carefully stir in the hot water.  Pour into prepared pan.
  5. Bake 1 hour in the preheated oven, until a knife inserted in teh center comes out clean.  Allow to cool in pan before serving.
